Broken Nintendo GameCube

by Ryan Parman • November 27, 2003 • Technology, Video Games • 25 comments

I’ve always been a fan of Nintendo. I’ve been a Nintendo fan since I got a hold of my first NES back in 1988 and bought a copy of Super Mario Bros 2. Although I have several other gaming systems as well, my preference has always been for Nintendo.

Anyways, I went down to the video store today, and rented a copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash for my GameCube. I stuck the disc in, and powered up the system. After an unusually long pause, the system went into setup mode, which is something is only does when the lid is open, or there is no game disc.

“Maybe it’s just dust,” I thought to myself as I wiped off the disc on my shirt and blew across the laser lens to get rid of any dust that may have been there. I tried it again, and it still didn’t work. So, I grabbed my Zelda: Wind Waker disc and tried that one. Same problem. Getting frusterated, I tried my copy of SSX Tricky. Still no luck. Well crap!

After 15 minutes with no luck, I figured it was the system, so I went online to look at my warranty/repair options. I’ve had the system for just over a year-and-a-half, so the warranty is definitely expired. I looked up my options for paying for a repair, and the cost was $74.95! Oh my goodness! With all of the Day-After-Thanksgiving sales going on, I can get a brand-new system for $80. So that’s what I’m probably going to do. I hate to do it though, ’cause it’s paying $80 bucks for something I already have.

Then, I looked down at my NES (that I still have). I grabbed my Super Mario Bros 3 cartridge, blew into it, blew into my NES, put the game in and turned it on. Within a few seconds, I saw Mario and Luigi running around on the bottom of the screen, followed closely by three koopa turtles (with the third one slightly out of sync with the first two, as always). If my NES can last me 15 years, why can’t my GameCube last me two?

I’ve got a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis 2, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, and a Nintendo GameCube, and it’s the GameCube that breaks. What the heck?!

That’s probably just a fluke. I’ve had my GC nearly as long, and nothing goes wrong ever apart from (very) rare lockups during THPS3 or Rogue Leader. This is nothing compared to the bugs that often plague PS2s and XBOXs. I’ve heard reports of melted DVDs and destroyed games.

I hope it was only a fluke, and not something that plagues all GC’s (although I doubt it). I went out to Best Buy today and got a new GameCube that was bundled with a special Zelda disc (including Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, and Majora’s Mask), EA’s Nascar Racing 2004, and a portable CD Player all for $100. Not bad…

The only thing that sucks about the Zelda disc is that I already got a different Zelda promo disc with my pre-order of Zelda: Wind Waker that included Ocarina of Time, and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest. The thing is that the two versions of Ocarina of Time can’t share the same data file on the memory card. I’m about halfway through the game on the older OOT disc, but when I went to play it with the new disc, it wouldn’t work.

Oh well…

Two words: Planned Obsolescence. I do feel for you, although Mario Kart: Double Dash works fine on my GC, possibly because I bought both on the same day !

i think it may have to do with the vents on the side. i hear people talk about broken gamecubes all the time, when the problem is the vents on the sides of the system were covered. if those vents are covered, the system will overheat and cause all sorts of problems, even permanent damage! (place your hand over the outtake vent to feel how hot the air is that comes out of there!!!)
so as long as air can freely flow through your gamecube, there shouldnt be any problems.

The same thing is happening to my Gamecube, it just say there’s been an error or some crap like that. I’ve tried everything, and i know it’s not the vents cause it’s in a spot where there’s nothing around it to block them. Well, frankly, i’m pissed off, but i have good news. Word id, there were some defective Gamecubes sold when it first came out (which is when i bought mine) and if you phone nintendo and give them your serial number, they’ll check if it’s one of those few defective gamecube, and if it is, they will replace it, even if your warrenty is over. So, i brought it in to fix it, and if this happens again, i’m phoning nintendo. Oh, and should i have to buy i new one, i wont, personally, i find the gamecube to be the best system, and i have several games for it, but if ‘m going to have to endure all this crap, well, i’d rather own an xbox.

My sister bought a new gamecube while back. and A couple days bafore it started to messing up as I put in a brand new The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker C.D. (one of my favorite gamecube games) and it started to say no disk in the gamecube or there is an error. Only sometimes I can play it for maybe 5 min., but before I save it it says it can read the disk. I’m like what the f*** is. My sister and I never covered up the vents like what CAPTAIN CORNFLAKE said. So I’m taking HeneryTye’s advice and call Nintendo to see if we bought a defected gamecube. At least I’m not the only person out there who has a problem with there gamecube.

I have the same problem with my cube, and have been through at least 6 controllers in less than 2 years — planned obsolence, or an obsolete company milking it’s dying name for all its worth? I also have a 15 year old NES that works when cleaned.
Time to make the permanent switch…

I had GC 1 yr. 2 months, and same thing has happened. Stinks! The old systems are still going strong…buy a new one? Not sure yet. Short life expectancy, though, since its predacessors lasted much longer.

Our gamecube just died. The thing made a funny noise as it was powered down, and now we get nothing. The disk doesn’t spin up, and we don’t even see a startup screen. The power on light works. It’s a little over a year old and not overused. I’ve read that there is an internal battery – has anyone ever changed this?

ok guys , this might sound really REALLY dumb , but my gamecube is broken , and i love trying to fix things , sure it may sound a little loseryish , but hey , what can i do ? Anyway I tried a few things that i thought might work , like cleaning the vents , still i got the error message, I cleaned the lens with a q-tip dipped in alcohol , and it still didnt work , then i figured what else can i do ? So for some really dumb reason i stuck it in the freezer. ont ask me y or even think it , but i did . After about 10 minutes i took it out , plugged it in fast , and popped in a game . Super mario sunshine was the game , and for some fatass reason it worked . I was so surprised and amazed , so i played it , and loaded a level , and it was all good………….for about 15 minutes until the system cooled down. Now everytime i wanna play i gotta freeze it , and beat a level as quick as i could.

The problem you all are having with disk read errors involves the laser, not the vents on the side (though it is a good idea to keep these clear). These lasers, like any light emitting diode (LED), will fail eventually. There are two things you can try. Clean the surface of the lens *gently* with a Q-Tip soaked in some cleaning fluid. Then dry it with the other side. If this does not work there is an adjustment that can be made to increase power to the laser. This, however, involves disassembling the unit, and taking a measurement with an Ohm meter. It is a hit-or-miss kind of thing. Not something you want to try unless you have some electronics background. I do buy broken systems, if interested, e-mail me.

The same thing is happening to me, but, its only with one game: Rogue Ops. I got about ten other games, and they work fine, but this game keeps giving me a error message, and it was new, so i called gamestop, and they sent me another copy, but i still got the same message.

Has anyone seen if Nintendo will repair it for free even after the warranty is over? I had a problem with my PS2 reading disk after about 2 years and they repaired it for free, and this was way after the warranty was up. Now my Nintendo is having the same problem as everyone else. One in every twenty tries it will boot up though with a beeping sound and will run awfully loud. I am not going to go out and buy a new one, I am hoping that someone knows what to say to get it repaired for free, Nintendo should be responsible for this!

the problem I am having is that when I put in a game it boots to the menu selection screen and wont go beyond that. like there is no disc in it or something. Anyone know whats causing this and how to correct it?
